I'm searching for information on James Elbert PAINTER who was born in
Montgomery City, MO on 12 Sep 1880 and died in Ellisville, St. Louis Co.,
MO on 05 May 1967. He was married to Mary Ann (BOLY) PAINTER. She was
born in Rankan MO (Can't find where this was, around KC, MO I was told) on
10 Aug 1881 and died on 31 Mar 1962 in Valley Park, St. Louis Co., MO.
They had lived in Valley Park in their own house at 49 Boyd Ave. for at
least 30 years. They were my birth mother's parents. Due to divorce when I
was 2, I never got to know them.

Any and all information about James or parents or siblings would beappreciated.
No one still alive in my family knows who his parents were or even wherethey came from.

Thanks
Painter, James Elbert "Bert" (I1394)

1. *Elias Haggerty Sr.
Marriage: Abt 1845 - Tionesta, Venango, Pennsylvania

Research:

Found family in 1850 Census of Rockland, Venango, Pennsylvania. Elias isage 39, Hannah is age 25. An Elmira is a child at 12 years old. If Hannahwere her mother, she would have been 13 years old at birth. Eliasprobably married previously.

In fact, the International Genealogical Index lists an Elias Hagertymarried to Rachel DUCK 13 Jul 1837 in Rockland, Venango, Pennsylvania. After looking at the patron submitted form for this IGI entry, Mrs.Donald L. Pope of Brea, California submitted it. She is Elias' 3rdgreat-grandniece. Elias is listed here as 26 years of age, which matchesthe 1810 date we've discovered. The source for this information asindicated on the form is the Franklin Intelligencer, 25 Jul 1837.

Found Elias Haggerty in the 1840 Census of Rockland, Venango,Pennsylvania: 1 male age 20-30, 1 male age 30-40, 1 female age under 5, 1female age 20-30. This suggests that Elias was previously married, andhad a daughter born 1835-1840, probably Elmira.

Frederick was first identified in the 1850 Census of Neshannock,Lawrence, Pennsylvania. Asa Brown was the head of the household, andEleanor is the mother.

Juliane Burbach, in an email dated 1 Aug 2000, found reference toFrederick's marriage on 12/9/1882 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana whichlists his parents as Frederich Goaz and Elener Hoffman. Frederick was age53. Probably a second marriage. The actual marriage record lists FredrichGoaz married to Lovina Bartly on 9 Dec 1822 but doesn't list ages, parentage, or residences. SERVICE RECORDS

Not everyone applied for a pension, but they will have service records. While service records do not contain the same wealth of information aspension records, they can still be valuable. Asa Goas' pension paperstotaled over 130 pages, but not once was his birth place listed. Hisservice records which included seven documents listed his birth place asBeaver, Pennsylvania.

Perhaps your ancestor was a minor, or very close to the age of 18. Inthese cases, they often had to obtain permission from their parents. Inthe case of David Brown, his father, Asa C. Brown signed the papers.

102 years ago today, Solomon W. Sivels, son of Absalom Sivils and Sarah Trotter Sivils, died during his service for the Union in the Civil War.

There is some discrepancy in his service unit. His online Civil War record says that he served in the 2nd Tennessee Infantry and his burial record that he served in the 2nd Tennessee Cavalry (Union). If he served in the Cavalry, it is possible that he was killed during their "Operations against Pegram March 22-April 2", though of course disease was the big killer. In this unit, 16 men were killed in action and 208 died of disease. His wife's 1890 Special Veterans and Widows Census record confirms that his service was in the Infantry. In the 2nd Tennessee Infantry 27 men were killed in action and 613 were killed by disease. Both units were serving near Murfreesboro, Tennessee in early 1863, but the Infantry was ordered to Lexington, KY on March 11. If this was his unit, one can be fairly sure that he was already ill and in hospital when they were ordered out and he was left behind.

Obviously I haven't obtained his Civil War record yet. It would answer all of these questions.

Solomon's widow Mahala never remarried and she and their son lived in Jefferson County, Tennessee from the War until they moved to Roane Co., TN just before 1890. She died there sometime before 1900.

Joseph M. Sivels married Lena Headrick the 22nd of September 1877 in Morgan County, Tennessee, where she was raised.

Joseph died in Roane County, Tn in 1919 and Lena moved in with her sister. They had no children. Lena died in Morgan Co., TN in 1920.

Great-Grandfather Jackson's name was Ruben - His eldest of 5 sons was also named Ruben. All large - over 6 feet tall and all over 200 pounds. These boys were by his first wife. They were all strong, athletic + The "Jackson Boys" usually carried off all prizes at "Log Rollings", shootings and other contests of strength and skill.

Great-Grandfather (Ruben) was married a second time and to this union wer born Samuel and Robert W. (My Grandfather) and a daughter Mary.

Their mother died when they were very young (Grandfather about 6 or 8 years old) - when his father died - Uncle Same went to live with a man by the name of Allen. A fine ? and millright for his day - Uncle Sam became a miller Came here (Neosho) just a close of Civil War and operated the brick mill - on North (Mill St) now College. Also at a later time operated a mill on Hickory Creek about 2-mi. S.E. or town (known as West's + later (now) as Zimmerman's Mill). He later went to Caverna - MO + operated a mill for a number of years, until his death.

My Grandfather Robt.W. (It is not known with whom he went to live after his fathers death - unless an older half brother.

He learned the brick mason trade. He evidently followed his trade from place to place and traveled over several counties in Tennessee. He would work a while in one community + then go to amother. He talked with the people with whom he stayed while working. Had a wonderful memory + knew the family history of ever family. He was a fine vocalist + taught "singing school" wherever he went in his work travels. Could sing well to his dying day.

He was jolly, loved to laugh + did.

He was married to Lucy Everitt. Had four sons John, Robert, Sam + George + 1-daughter Lucy. My father George was about 6 years old when his father came to Neosho. A few years after the close of the Civil War + after his Uncle Sam had been here some 5 or 6 years. They came here by ox team via Cape Girardea, Rolla + Springfield. Their home was near Gardner Sto - near Union City in Obion Co. Tenn. where their family at one time owned a large amount of good land.

My father, George W. (Washington) began work when about 14 years old for Uncle Sam in the brick mill. Had very little chance to go to school but like his father was a good singer. Played bass drum in town band and was ? ?. He lived + worked here (Neosho- balance of his life. He wa married May 1, 1882 to Miss Ida V. Boyd (My mother) They had 7-children - Floyd, Jessie, Everitt, Wayne, Reginald, Percy + Pauline. 5 boys - 2 girls. I am oldest, will be 59 - June 17, 1942. All children + both parents living at this time.

As I remember by Grandfather's last words the night he died, it ran something like this prayer-

"O God a father to them be
and keep them from all harm.
May they live to worship (or cherish) Thee
and dwell among thy charm"

Talking to Lonnie Jackson - September 23, 1938

Lonnie says that his father Samuel and my grandfather Robert W. were brothers and sons of one Ruben Jackson. They had six half brothers, one of whose name was also Ruben. All large men, Ruben was the smallest of the brothers, standing 6 foot 3 inches in sock feet

Samuel and Robert
These brothers grew to manhood in Obion County, Tennessee, around Union City and Gardner Station. Samuel emigrated to Southwest Misouri, 1865. Robert came to Missouri on 1/17/76. They both settled in Neosho, Robert W. had three sons all born in Tennessee who came with him to Neosho, Robert I., Samuel and George W. George W. my father was the youngest and was about 6 or 7 years old when they came to Neosho. He married Ida V. Boyd May 1, 1882, to them were born seven children as follows: Floyd M., Jessie Mae, Everett B. George Wayne, Reginald D., Percy R., and Pauline. All seven children living at this time, I was 55 years of age last June 17, 1938.

My grandfather, Robert W. and his brother Samuel said they were second cousins of Thomas Jonathan (Stonewall) Jackson and that they belonged to the Virginia branch of the Jackson family. My grandfather Robert W. was married to Lucy Everett in Tennessee but she died before they came to Missouri.
