    • THE PROBLEM OF IDENTIFYING MILLY SLINKER'S DAUGHTERS
      T. Anderson Painter

It is commonly believed, apparently because of published research on the Slinker family, that Phebe b. 1786 and her sister Nancy b. 1788 are daughters of Milly Slinker and Barnett Payne, and not daughters of Frederick and Susannah Payne Slinker. The ‘evidence’ seems to be that their marriages, while authorized by Frederick, do not specify that he is their father. The family tradition that Milly had two daughters fits this as well, but this conclusion ignores three important points:

      1. Phebe and Nancy's birthdates
      2. the testimony of Milly herself
      and 3. Milly's age.

If Phebe and Nancy were her daughters, she would have been living irregularly with Barnett for over 15 years. Not unheard of, but there also exist Mildred Slinker b. 1793 and Cenia Slinker b. 1794, both without known parents, and their birth dates much more closely match that of Milly's known sons Andrew Slinker b. 1797 and Barnett Slinker b.1801-1810.

Also, about 1803, Milly Slinker tesified in the case of the contested will of Barnett's father, Joseph. In it, she states that she had been"living with Joseph Payne seven or eight years". Meaning, she would have been living with him (and we can assume Barnett) since about 1795-6. This coincides much more closely with the idea that Mildred and Cenia are her daughters.

The final problem is that Milly was probably born 1771-1775 (the 1820 census says she was born before 1775, and the 1830 says between 1771-1780) This would have made her between 11-15 when Phebe was born and 13-17 whan Nancy was born.

She would have been 18-22 when Mildred was born. A much more likely age for an unwed mother whose children aren't taken into care (which was done quite rigorously then).

      To summarize:

1786 Milly 11-15 years old - Phebe Slinker born
1788 Milly 13-17 years old - Nancy Slinker born

1793 Milly 18-22 years old - Mildred Slinker born
1794 Milly 19-23 years old - Cenia Slinker born

abt. 1795-6 - Milly moves in with Barnett and his family

      1797 Andrew Slinker born
      b. 1801-1810 Barnett Slinker born

Considering these facts, it is much more likely that Milly's 2 daughters were Mildred and Cenia Slinker, and that Phebe and Nancy were daughters of Frederick Slinker.

A side note, it appears no one gave consent for Mildred's marriage to John McAllister (this was probably due to her age, 33) and Cenia's marriage was consented to by a neighbor, Samuel Larue.

The original question of Phebe and Nancy's parentage seems to have arisen because Christopher was thought to be the son of Frederick, making marriage with Phebe (who was up to that time thought to be the daughter of Frederick) impossible, thus the idea that she was Milly's daughter was developed. But this death record for Christopher clearly states that he was the son of "John", clearing the way for Phebe to be the daughter of Frederick.

"James Abner Jolliff came from New Jersey and settled at Lexington,Kentucky. (Barren County). He was married to his first wife ElizabethNorris of Lexington Ky. Barren Co. He settled at Lexington on theKentucky River and lived in a fort. (Fort not known) and was married in a fort and all of his children were born in a fort including your great, great grandfather Colonel James Jolliff. They had 4 sons: Abner, Richard, james, and Elijah. And 3 daughters: Elizabeth, Jehoida, and Rachel. He was married to second wife (no name or record was given of her). They had 2 little girls. They had seperated and their marriage was anunpleasant marriage - because she disapproved of religious worship of all kind and she left him and took the 2 little girls and went to Texas. No one knew whatever became of them."

"Frank Hiett Rhea said that his second marriage was an unpleasant onebecause Mildred disapproved of religious worship of all kinds and sheleft him, took the 2 little girls and went to Texas. Some of this mightbe true, but it appears that the girls actually grew up, married andlived in Kentucky. However, they lost contact with their Jolliffhalf-siblings in Illinois."

      -Mary Jo Freeman,noted 20 April 2005

I tend to agree with Mary Jo Freeman. There may be something in this, certainly the family lost touch with these daughters of the second family, but one would expect that Milly knew what she was getting into when she married a minister. It might be something simpler than thepossibility that she hated religion, perhaps the terms of his will? Thatall of his other children left Barren Co., Ky suggests that Milly might have gotten any land.

Millie Slinker's statement goes even farther by saying:
I Milly Slinker of Bedford County have been living with Joseph Payne seven or eight years and do not believe that the old man had the full exercise of his reason during the last illness - one day in the time of his illness I heard his son Barnard Payne read a note of hand to him and the old man said he did not know what it was he was reading to him and that Barnard could not make him understand it and I frequently heard the old man say with an oath that he would never make a will not withstanding his son James and old James Johnson had often persuaded him to make one, for he chose his children all to have an equal part of his estate for that James was not so good to his mother that he should will it all to him.
