Am trying to identify Aaron Cox b. 1816 NC, son of Aaron & PollyHill >Cox of Stokes Co NC and Claiborne Co TN. Aaron is a brother to my>ancestor, William Cox.
Aaron Cox Sr. and my Reuben Cox have to have been brothers. I can'tprove it, but it has to be.
Aaron Sr. had to have been born about 1780. The 1850 Claiborne County,Tennessee census has Almarian Mitchell age 46 and his wife Synthia age36. Presumably, Synthia was Synthia Cox, sister of Aaron Cox Jr. whomarried and was divorced by Experience Wells. Both Almarian and Synthiawere born in North Carolina. They had children John 19, Mary A. 17,Elizabeth 14, Jane 12, and Nancy 10. All the children were born inTennessee. But best of all, Aaron Cox age 70 and born in North Carolinawas living with them. In 1850, the census did not clearly identifyfamily relationships, but surely Aaron Cox was the father-in-law ofAlmarian Mitchell.
Fast rewind to 1810, Wilkes County, North Carolina (adjacent to StokesCounty, North Carolina). Living next door to each other were my ReubenCox and an Aaron Cox. Here is the census entry for Aaron Cox.
p.278 Aaron Cox 10010/20100
00-09 1801-1810 1 2
10-15 1795-1800 0 0
16-25 1785-1794 0 1
26-44 1766-1784 1 0 Aaron Cox
45-?? ????-1765 0 0
The female age 16-25 was surely Aaron's wife Polly Hill, and the male age00-09 was surely Aaron Cox Jr. But how do I prove it?
If Reuben and Aaron Sr. were brothers, then Aaron Jr. and his bondsmanHorton were first cousins. But how do I prove it? But I certainly don'tbelieve for a minute that Aaron Cox Jr. and Horton Cox were sufficientlywell acquainted for one to serve as the other's bondsman, and yet for thecommon surname to be just an accident. They *had* to be related. Andwith Aaron Sr. and Reuben living next door to each other, then firstcousins seem to be the most likely relationship for Horton and Aaron Jr.
Aaron is cited as marrying Experience Mitchell 25 July 1845Greene Co TN. His sister, Cynthia md an Almarian Mitchell in ClaiborneCo. Haven't found a relationship between these Mitchells. Surely,Thomas Mitchell who married Experience Wells was related to AlmarianMitchell. But how do I prove it? A divorce decree for Aaron & Speedy Coxis noted in the Chancery >Records of Greene Co.
It reads ......In July 1845 they were married and had one child. Whenreturning from a visit to her mother.......She has heard he was at hisfather's in Claiborne Co and also went to to the Mexican War..... Divorcegranted Feb 1850
Poor gal she had to pay cost. Aaron the Younger didn't appear to retunto Claiborne Co. At least I haven't found him. I can't speak to the1860 and 1870 censuses. But Aaron Jr. (I guess I should really call himAaron the younger until we prove he was "Jr.") definitely was not in the1850 census anywhere in Tennessee (can't speak to other states), andAaron Jr. definitely was not in the 1880 census anywhere in the UnitedStates. Of course, Experience and James married the next month. As Isaid they were returning from a visit to her mother. "he was >riding herhorse and carrying the child she walking - at a road fork >he laid thechild in the lap of a girl in the rod and said he would >find a place tolive upon. She wanted him to come home but off he >went. It has been 3yrs and she has not seen him since......." This whole strange set ofaffairs goes far to explain why Experience Wells and her son Claudiuskept the surname Mitchell, I think.

Aaron Cox in 1850 Claiborne Co TN
Posted by: Dave Parman Date: November 19, 2001 at 19:38:32
I am looking for information on the family of Aaron Cox, listed as being70 years old in Claiborne County, TN in the 1850 census. He is livingwith Almaria Mitchell, 44, (likely his daughter). Some of the Cox familydaughters married into the Chick/Cheek families of Knox County, KY andClaiborne County, TN. I am wondering if these Cox women who married intothe Chick's were daughters of Aaron.

Hi: I descend from Aaron & Polly Hill Cox's oldest child, William Cox bc1807 Stokes Co NC.
The Cox girls did marry the Cheeks/Chicks.
Sarah Cox bc1833, daughter of William & Delilah Cox md James Hale inClaiborne Co. She is my greatgrandmother and was living with a "Chick"sister in 1900 in Clay Co. KY.
This is very superficial. My office is full of Christmas boxes so canclarify post Christmas. At this point I hope I am not repeating myself toyou.

Dot, thanks for responding. The Christmas season has had me 'hopping',too. Is Margaret Cox who married Robert Cheek on September 22, 1849 inClaiborne County, TN part of your line, too? I suspect Margaret to be asister of Mary Cox who married my 3rd great-grandfather WilliamChick/Cheek on February 5, 1845 in Claiborne County, TN. My William andMary moved up to Clay County, KY by 1880. Robert and Margaret moved up toLaurel County, KY by 1880. Are Margaret and Mary sisters of your Sarah(born c. 1833)? Can you tell me more about Aaron and Polly Hill Cox? MyWilliam and Mary Chick/Cheek are found in 1850 Claiborne County, TN witha Mary Cox (age 55) whom I have suspected of being my William'smother-in-law? Is this 55 year-old Mary Cox a daughter in-law of yourAaron and Polly Hill Cox? Please, get back to me.
Thanks and God bless, Dave. firstname.lastname@example.org
