Probably captured with Sgt. Oliver M. Brown, John Ford Ellison and possibly William Bible. His cousin Jotham Brown was killed at this same battle. Sgt. Oliver M. Brown is noted as captured on the 6th of August 1864 at Utoy's Creek, the same day and place and John H. Brown.
John Ford Ellison is noted as captured the 6th of August 1864 in Atlanta, GA.

Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 8th Mounted Infantry, Co. D, (noted 28 May 2004), "On April 10, 1864, the XXIII Corps was again reorganized, and the regiment placed in Colonel James W. Reilly's 1st Brigade, Brigadier General Jacob D. Cox's 3rd Division. Under various commanders, it served in this brigade until the end of the war. On April 20, at Bull's Gap, Tennessee, the regiment reported 27 officers, 369 men present for duty. It was sent to Knoxville by train on April 26, from where it moved down to Red Gap, Georgia, for the beginning of the Atlanta Campaign. It crossed the Georgia line on May 7, and after some preliminary skirmishing, was heavily engaged at Resaca on May 14. During the campaign which followed it was first commanded by Colonel Reeve, then by Captain Robert A. Ragan, and finally by Captain James W. Berry. Colonel Reeve was discharged July 14 on surgeon's certificate of disability."

"Although almost constantly engaged for the next three months, the heaviest fighting in which the regiment took part was an attempt to cross Utoy Creek on August 6. Of this engagement, Brigadier General Reilly wrote: "Where all behaved so gallantly, it is very difficult to give special mention to any, but I cannot, in justice, neglect to bear official testimony to the gallant and heroic conduct of the Eighth Tennessee Infantry officers and men, without any distinction. The list of casualties, however, is their best eulogy, when it is known that the regiment went into the charge with but about 160 muskets." Berry, who commanded the regiment at that time, reported: "The regiment entered this charge with 223 men, and lost 26 killed, five mortally wounded, 36 wounded, and 16 missing, making a total of 83 casualties. In this serious charge the officers and men of the regiment exhibited in the highest degree the bravery, discipline, presence of mind which characterizes veteran troops."."

      ********************************

On the 15th of March 1863, John and two of his second cousins, Oliver M.Brown and Jotham Brown, enlisted in Company D, 8th Regiment Infantry Tennessee (U.S.A.). On the 6th of August 1864, Jotham was killed in the battle of Utoy Creek, while Oliver and John were both captured and sent to the infamous Andersonville Prison in Georgia.

Oliver was transferred with John, mistakenly noted as "George H. Brown", to Florence Prison in South Carolina. Either on this trip or soon after his arrival, John died. Oliver died at Florence Stockade.

      Date(s): August 5-7, 1864

Principal Commanders: Maj. Gen. John M. Schofield [US]; Gen. John B. Hood[CS]

Forces Engaged: Army of the Ohio [US]; Army of Tennessee [CS]

      Estimated Casualties: Unknown

Description: After failing to envelop Hoodís left flank at Ezra Church,Sherman still wanted to extend his right flank to hit the railroadbetween East Point and Atlanta. He transferred John M. Schofieldí s Armyof the Ohio from his left to his right flank and sent him to the northbank of Utoy Creek. Although Schofieldís troops were at Utoy Creek onAugust 2, they, along with the XIV Corps, Army of the Cumberland, did notcross until the 4th. Schofieldís force began its movement to exploit thissituation on the morning of the 5th, which was initially successful.Schofield then had to regroup his forces, which took the rest of the day.The delay allowed the Rebels to strengthen their defenses with abatis, which slowed the Union attack when it restarted on the morning of the6th. The Federals were repulsed with heavy losses by Bateís Division andfailed in an attempt to break the railroad. On the 7th, the Union troopsmoved toward the Confederate main line and entrenched. Here they remaineduntil late August.
