Subject : Fourth Marriage for James E. Pierce?
Date : Wed, 24 Apr 2002 11:52:51 -0400
The 1870 Greene County, Tennessee census entry for James E. Pierce is asfollows:
Greene County, Tennessee, Dist. 7, Romeo PO,
30 Sept 1870, p.245b, HN 131, FN 131
Pearce James 68 m w farmer 2000/1000 TN
Elizabeth 49 f w keeping house IN
Thomas 25 m w farm laborer TN attended school
Newton 17 m w TN attended school
Martha 15 f w TN attended school
Sarah M. 13 f w TN attended school
Matilda 10 f w TN attended school
Daniel 7 m w TN attended school
Note in particular that James' wife was enumerated as "Elizabeth" ratherthan as "Experience". This could have been an enumerator's error. Noticethat Elizabeth's age is correct to have been Experience. It certainly isnot a transcription error, because I have verified against the censusmicrofilm.
However, I think the census entry could be correct, and in fact probablyis correct. I think that perhaps James Pierce had a fourth wife, and hisfourth wife was named Elizabeth. There is a Greene County, Tennesseemarriage James Peerce to Elizabeth Cruraty, 13 Aug 1865. This is fromthe LDS Web site. It seems likely that there is a transcription error ofElizabeth's surname on the LDS Web site. I need to check the actualmarriage book to see if I can figure out the correct spelling. Also, there might be additional clues if there is a bondsman listed.
But in any case, the timing is correct for Experience Wells to have died1863/1865 (possibly while giving birth to Daniel in 1863), and for JamesPierce to have remarried in 1865. The evidence is certainlycircumstantial, but I cannot find any other James Pierce married to anElizabeth in the 1870 census.
Notice that the birthplace of James' wife Elizabeth was listed asIndiana. So perhaps there was some connection between Elizabeth on theone hand and Martha Margaret Carter of Indiana/Illinois who marriedClaudius Cox on the other hand. Also, census birth places arenotoriously incorrect, but I still think that the listing of Elizabeth'sbirth place as Indiana argues against Elizabeth and Experience being thesame person, with the name being listed as Elizabeth in 1870 because of asimple enumeration error.
What do you think? I can't find James or Elizabeth or Experience in the1880 census.
